Research Software Engineer/ Senior Research Software Engineer

The mission of the Center for Computation and Visualization (CCV, ccv.brown.edu) is to provide the scientific and technical computing expertise required to advance computational research and support Brownâ™s academic mission. We envision an environment where computational best practices, innovative solutions, and expert knowledge combine to build advanced tools for research and to enable new discoveries. We are a team of data scientists and research software engineers with a wide range of scientific backgrounds (e.g., Engineering, Physics, Computer Vision, Biology, Psychology, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Industry, etc.).
The Research Software Engineer (RSE) will work together with other members of our team and the Brown community to develop and deploy high-quality software packages and software engineering solutions that support Brown researchers and their collaborators. The RSE is expected to be a motivated, agile learner who keeps up-to-date with emerging technologies across a wide range of fields such as scientific programming, web/mobile development, data management, analysis, and visualization. The RSE is expected to quickly become comfortable with best practices in software engineering with a strong emphasis on reproducibility; this includes version control, testing, continuous integration, containerized applications and multiple programming languages for data science and visualization. All members of CCV are encouraged to take ownership of projects, mentoring of interns, and lead outreach activities to promote CCV.

This is a three year fixed-term staff position, with the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding.
The successful candidate, as a minimum, should have the following background:Â Â
Grade 10: Bachelor's degree with strong computational emphasis such as Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related field. 1-2 years of experience.
Grade 11 (Senior) Masterâ™s degree with strong computational emphasis such as Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related field, plus 4 years of experience. Equivalent experience may be an acceptable substitute
Knowledge of Linux/UNIX systems and shell scripting
Experience with at least two programming languages such as Julia, Python, MATLAB, R, C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Rust, Swift
Experience writing, packaging and/or deploying scientific libraries, web applications, and/or databases
Experience with (or interest in learning) mobile application development in support of research on iOS and/or Android platform
Experience with (or interest in learning) JavaScript front-end libraries/frameworks such as React, Ember, Vue or others
High professional standards with the ability to manage competing requirements in a diverse user population
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with strong analytical ability
Versatile, enthusiastic and eager to learn new skills
Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment
Desirable Qualifications
Candidates with some or all of the following qualifications are highly preferred:
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, containerization.
Experience with cloud computing software and services
Experience with scientific visualization in one or more science domains
Interest in UI/UX design
The grade of the position will be based on the qualifications of the chosen candidate. Â
